Introduction

The City of Smithville's Resilient Community Comprehensive Plan creates a strategic framework guiding the city’s growth and development, enhancing its ability to withstand and recover from challenges over the next 20 years.

Community Profile

Smithville is a historic town nestled along the banks of the Colorado River in Bastrop County. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and striking natural beauty, the city’s downtown district boasts carefully preserved architecture that offers a window into its past.

Community Resiliency

Community resiliency in Smithville refers to the ability of the community to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant adverse events, particularly natural hazards.

Land Use & Development

Smithville has an important opportunity to proactively guide future growth to ensure it benefits the community. With growth expanding in the Central Texas region, now is the time to establish strong development standards to maintain local control.

Transportation

Integrating land use principles into transportation planning plays a pivotal role in enhancing community resilience by directing development away from hazard-prone areas and minimizing risk. It is essential for transportation networks and critical infrastructures to be robustly constructed to endure various hazards, ensuring they function during crises.

Housing

The focus is on affordability, renovations, and new construction to sustain Smithville’s housing market.

Public Facilities

This chapter outlines Smithville's critical infrastructure and recreational assets, emphasizing their role in community resilience, safety, and quality of life. It details 13 types of critical facilities supporting emergency response, healthcare, utilities, education, and governance, highlighting strategic placement and interdependencies that affect resilience planning

Infrastructure

Community infrastructure policies significantly influence land use and development, playing a key role in building resilience against hazards. By limiting public facilities expansion in vulnerable areas and protecting critical infrastructure, communities can enhance their safeguard against risks.

Has been the fastest growing region for how many years? several decades? Provide some context. Or say "is" the fastest growing region.
"The Capital Region, which includes Bastrop County and XX other counties centered around Austin..."
With the graphic on the next page, this seems redundant and unnecessary. And it isn't particularly well written, sorry.
I will send you something via email to clean this up. It's not particularly clear.
From 2000 in 1900 to how many in 1970?
Be consistent with the data. I shared Average HH Income from the 2023 ACS data. Since that's available now, you should update this graphic. And you may want to consider using different information in the graphic above so you have some 'value add' and less repetition.
What does "sm" mean? Also, this section uses commas instead of periods like above.
Commas instead of periods for all the percentages. Is this adapted from a Spanish-language graphic?
Census ACS says Smithville City is $56,031 median HH income... Where did you get this number?
Something is wrong with this number
Residents not residentes -- this is the English version ;)
Mostly not mosstly
Please correct all misspellings! Check document throughout. Have another copy editor look at the language and check for grammar etc.
2.8 not 2,8
What do you mean: "driven by 1440"?
Is this font choice intentional?
Squished logo
Dr. Gazley receives LAND grant
This is an interesting concept for portraying a timeline, but some of the graphic elements are difficult to read. The "wooden" signs for example. And the fonts are inconsistent.
What's the difference between "normal" and "high contrast" mode? I didn't see anything change on my version?
Some elements on this graphic are difficult to read ("wooden" signs) and text is inconsistent. But it's a good way to showcase a timeline.
Suggestion

-Instead of just median income, can you do a chart with more income catetories and % of households in each? Would be informative to see % of low income categories.
- 2 white collar categories?
Edit please:
"Smithville is a desirable place to live with an overall score of 8 out of 10. Cost of living and crime rate both score 7, education, diversity, and weather score 8, and the city's housing affordability scores 9. All in all, Smithville offers a high quality of life at an economical price point."
We didn't jump up 500 people in 2 years. I know that's one estimate, but that's not the best one.
Section doesn't flow. You need to talk about the entrepreneurial and progressive nature of the residents and how they found opportunities and worked for improved quality of life with a focus on community. The bicentennial info should go with the Jamboree info. I have some language in another document I'd like to share later.
If you nudge the image to the right a bit, you might avoid the weird spacing to the left.
Did you want to include the part about the "fickle nickel"? The rest of the legend says that Mr. Smith used a trick nickel, so he was sure to win. The Heritage Society has a letter Murray Burleson wrote to a cousin saying he was "foiled by a fickle nickel."
... annual celebrations including festivals and parades bring neighbors together...
in reply to Jill Strube's comment
Honey's is also out of business and the Tin Man is in the wrong place. Its a really great graphic, but so much is so wrong!
in reply to Jill Strube's comment
And also, Coach Qs and Midnight Monkey are no longer what they were. Where did you find this graphic?
It isn't the Back Door Cafe anymore... although it was for 18 years. Now it's a cream colored building called the Sweet Tea Cafe
I'm about to update this link, so I'll send you the new link soon as possible.
Edit for passive voice -- "Several existing plans and associations enrich and influence Smithville's 2025 Smithville Comprehensive Plan."
in reply to Jill Strube's comment
Wish I could edit the previous comment - should read "... promoting sustainable growth and enhancing the community's resilience"
Suggestion
... promoting the city's growth and enhancing the community's resilience.
Suggestion
Remove space before "Includes"
in reply to Jill Strube's comment
Suggestion
Related to "Smithville's"
Suggestion
Minor edit -- this is the "foot" mark, not the apostrophe ("flat" versus "curved" mark). Please watch for that throughout the document.
Question
Should the landmarks be updated to what is currently there? Midnight Monkey is now Smithville General Store, and Honeys has closed.
